Project Update: State Route 240 Rail Crossing – October 8, 2024

October 8, 2024

A public bid opening was held on September 24, 2024 for the State Route 240 rail crossing replacement project. The Port of Benton received one bid for the work in the amount of $1,629,262.00, which is nearly 60% over the construction budget.
Therefore, the bid was rejected.

The Port is working on revising the bid and will re-advertise to a broader group as soon as possible.

Port of Benton anticipated replacing the State Route 240 rail crossing this summer. However, due to delay, the Port anticipates the crossing project will take place in early 2025.

Project Funding

Port of Benton is paying for the $1.3 million SR 240 rail crossing replacement with an $865,000 National Highway Freight Program grant via the Washington State Department of Transportation and $435,000 in Port matching funds.

Planned Work

  • Replace the existing railroad crossing and the crossing’s flashing lights and gates where SR 240 crosses the Port’s railroad track
  • Port of Benton will continue asphalt and concrete maintenance on this crossing until it is replaced

The Port will continue to share updates and the resulting construction schedule as soon as they are available.
