Least-Conflict Solar Siting on the Columbia Plateau |
The Columbia Plateau in eastern Washington supports productive farmland and rangeland as well as native shrubsteppe habitat. It is also some of the most preferred land in Washington state for solar energy development. The Least-Conflict Solar Siting Project on the Columbia Plateau poses the question: Where can large-scale solar be developed in the Columbia Plateau region while also ensuring that important habitat, productive farmlands and rangelands, Tribal treaty rights and cultural resources, and other interests are protected?
To address this question and find a common path forward, the Washington State University Energy Program is leading the voluntary, collaborative, non-regulatory effort to engage Washingtonians in conversations and a structured process to identify least-conflict areas in the region for utility-scale solar development.

AWB - Energy Solutions Summit |
Low-cost energy has been one of Washington’s primary competitive advantages for decades thanks to an abundance of renewable hydroelectricity. But with our region’s dams under attack and with new efforts to restrict or eliminate the use of natural gas, the region’s energy future is unclear. Join us at the Energy Solutions Summit to discuss what this means for employers and the economy. |
