Port Conducts Airport Emergency Training with Richland Police & Fire

RICHLAND, Wash. – A mock plane crash at the Richland Airport prepared first responders for emergencies. 

Port of Benton conducted emergency training at the Richland Airport with local emergency response personnel on Monday and Tuesday, with additional training planned for Friday. Port Airport Manager Quentin Wright led the training.

The training exercises included a test of the 9-1-1 system and a real-time response to the airport by Richland’s emergency personnel to locate and secure the scene.

Additional training involved a demonstration of the proper technique to shut off an aircraft’s fuel and electrical systems and how to power down the airport’s high-voltage lighting system safely. 

“Airports are unique and sprawling environments,” Wright stated. “Our goal was to practice implementing the Richland Airport Emergency Plan and get as many fire, emergency medical services and police personnel onto the airport property as possible so they become more familiar with the facility.”

Port of Benton strives to maintain the highest safety standards at the airport. Collaborating with local emergency jurisdictions allows the port to familiarize first responders with the airport, share best practices and emphasize safety to all airport tenants and users.
