PORT OF BENTON HISTORY

The Port of Benton was established in 1958, as a special purpose district under Washington state statute RCW 53; The Port’s creation followed the City of Richland being turned over to the citizens by the U.S. Army Corp related to the community’s role in the Manhattan Project and Hanford site.

The Port of Benton is one of the few nuclear ports within the country. The Port of Benton’s district encompasses two-thirds of Benton County and it has a unique and diverse focus ranging from value added agriculture to high tech research and development along with manufacturing.
